Over three and a half years ago my boyfriend and I were sitting in an airport flying back home from North Carolina to New York. We had some time to spare so we decided to sit down and eat at one of the restaurants. We ordered an outrageously delicious plate of nachos which were covered with cheese, sour cream, guacamole, beans and chicken. Of course we needed a drink to wash down our nachos, so we complimented our meal with 2 Corona beers and a lime. Needless to say, I was in Heaven!!!!!
When I finished eating, I sat back to digest, as I was so full and ready for a nap. When I looked down, the zipper on my pants looked as if it was struggling for dear life not to rip open. My bra strap was digging into me as the skin underneath the strap was also screaming for dear life. I was so confused and torn with emotions. My mouth was in heaven from what I just ate, yet my body was so uncomfortable. Right then and there my boyfriend and I decided to challenge each other to a weight loss contest. The winner would be the one that lost the highest percentage of body weight within two months time. The reward was 10 reflexology massages paid in full by the loser of the contest.
I was determined not to lose this contest and focused on how great my body would feel from receiving 10 fully paid massages and losing weight. GAME ON!!!!! I could not wait to get started.
The following morning I looked through a few meal plans that I had and did some research on the internet. The common theme throughout all of my research suggested eating food that came from the earth and did not include anything that was processed. I came across Michael Pollan’s philosophy of “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.
This philosophy seemed so simple, it resonated with me, yet I was a little perplexed. What was I to do with my 100 calorie snack pack bags or my diet beverages? I did not want them to all go to waste. I decided to put these items in the back of the food closet. When the two month challenge was over and I still wanted to eat them, barring that they did not expire, I would indulge. That was comforting to me and I was ready to move on.
I have to be honest, the first week of this challenge was a struggle and I was not very happy. Every decision regarding my meals seemed daunting. Yet as time moved forward, each day began to get a little easier when it came to meal planning. I actually looked forward to going grocery shopping, cooking and packing my lunch for the next day. 90% of my food purchases consisted of fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, whole grains and seafood. Purchasing processed food was kept to a minimum for the other members of my household that were by no means interested in my new outlook on Healthy eating.
This is truly how I began to feel
As I started to lose weight, my clothes fit better, I felt lighter and my confidence grew. My cravings for sweets greatly decreased over time as I went through my own sugar detoxification process without even being cognizant of it. I remember a cold evening that I was in Upstate, NY and ran out of my stash of M&M’s. I was unable to sleep for the entire night as my sugar cravings were so strong and I had nowhere to go to purchase my drug of choice, which happened to be my M&M’s.
Thankfully, I have also found through my detoxification process, my body craved nutritious, wholesome food and the processed food no longer had the intense appeal it use to have. Three and a half years later, I have kept off the 20 pounds that I have shed and feel amazing. I consider myself to be “Healthy” and in the best physical shape of my life. My Primary Care Physician, Cardiologist, Dentist and Gynecologist can attest to this as well, as their examinations, bloodwork and non-invasive tests can concur also. I schedule appointments with these doctors on an annual basis for maintenance and preventative measures.
In an effort to “Keep things real,” I do allow myself one day a week to indulge in all of the glorious, processed, fattening, delicious foods (that is if you can actually put these items in the food category) that are available to the United States consumers. I would be more than happy to elaborate on my strategy for “Keeping it real” in my next blog.
When I began this journey, I did not realize that putting my focus back on nature and bringing things back to simplicity was one of the key ingredients to weight loss success. Our choices in life should be easy and not a struggle and that should apply to our food as well.
Zana Juices has been developed with the same philosophy in mind-it is made with only natural ingredients and the philosophy of it is quite simple.
